Masonic Village Flag Raising Ceremony Honors Past and Commences Future
On May 25, 1910, more than 1,500 people gathered for Masonic Village's flag raising ceremony - the organization's first public event. Exactly 100 years later, the Masonic Village has a goal of gathering at least the same number of community members, residents and staff in the Veteran's Grove at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, for a flag raising ceremony to celebrate its history and commence the Masonic Village's second century of service.
The Masonic Village is also taking the flag raising program to residents who may prefer to stay closer to home. On May 25, at 2 p.m., residents of the nursing and personal care areas will enjoy a flag raising celebration in the Masonic Health Care Center Roosevelt Courtyard.
Chimes resounding from the Sell Chapel carillon will mark the beginning of both celebrations. The Masonic Village Men's Chorus will perform, and Elizabethtown Mayor Chuck Mummert will sing the national anthem and make a proclamation. At the afternoon event, a flag which flew over the U.S. Capitol and was acquired and donated by Masonic Village resident Providence Eshelman will be raised. At the evening ceremony, to represent the countless people who have had a hand in securing the Masonic Village's future, a multitude of staff, residents and community members will help raise the flag which flew over the Capitol of Pennsylvania on May 6, 2010.
Since June 25, 1910 - when the first resident moved to the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown - staff, volunteers, donors and community members have helped to meet the needs of and show love to more than 16,280 adult residents and 2,075 children within the campus. To celebrate this accomplishment with the whole community, the Masonic Village staff and residents have planned several events this summer and will provide more information closer to the dates:
- Memorial Day Service: Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Grove
- Fireworks in the Formal Gardens: Friday, June 25, at approximately 9 p.m.
- "Masonic Village: 100th Anniversary" Book Available for Purchase: Beginning Friday, June 25 at campus gift shops, the Masonic Village Farm Market, www.MasonicVillagesPA.org or by calling 361-4520.
- Rededication of Grand Lodge Hall by Donors Dave and Joanne Roberts: Saturday, June 26, at 2:30 p.m. in the Grand Lodge Hall Assembly Room
- Commemorative Worship Service: Sunday, June 27, at 9 a.m. in the Freemason Cultural Center Brossman Ballroom
