Existing Conditions
The stream channel has eroded through sediments which were collected behind historic colonial mill dams, leaving a high bank. The roots of the plant life along the bank are unable to reach the groundwater, preventing stabilization of the bank and removal of nitrogen from the water. The floodplain is unable to absorb surface flows and nitrates are transported to receiving waters downstream.

Restored Conditions
After the removal of legacy sediments, the roots of plant life are able to interact with the groundwater, stabilizing the creek bed, removing nitrates and creating an improved habitat for wildlife. The wide, flat floodplain allows for increased flood and stormwater storage.
